LSU’s Brian Kelly: ‘I think my accent’s pretty good’

LSU football coach Brian Kelly appeared Monday at SEC Media Days in Nashville, and naturally the subject of his often-inconsistent speaking accent came up.

Kelly — a Massachusetts native who has spent most of his coaching career in the Midwest — made headlines shortly after being hired at LSU in late 2021, when he appeared to adopt a strange Southern accent during an appearance at a Tigers basketball game. It’s become a running joke ever since, but Kelly had an answer prepared Monday when asked if his accent had “improved” during his time in Louisiana.

“I think my accent is pretty good and has gotten better throughout the recruiting process,” Kelly deadpanned. “It depends on if I’m in northern Louisiana or southern Louisiana. Sometimes I get over Lake Charles, it’s got to change a little bit.”

Kelly’s Tigers went 10-4 and won the SEC West in 2022, his first season in Baton Rouge. He has won 294 games in 33 seasons as a head coach at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, Cincinnati and Notre Dame in addition to LSU.
